FRESHER'S SURVEY 2018

By Vishwani, Sonali, Amandeep & Kshitij

Life is a race and so is JEE
After a series of examinations and emotional imbalance, some souls find their way in the arms of mother IET. Every year the gates of IET welcome variety of minds, some confused and lost while some are completely optimistic about shaping their future here. This freshmen survey is nothing but a sum of what new batch of IET holds this year (2018).

Scroll through the interactive graphs and charts on this page for a visual representation of the Class of 2022. The data was collected in a survey conducted by IET WHITEBOARD during the month of August. About 400 freshers responded. WHITEBOARD did not adjust the data for any possible self-selection bias.

Freshies from all the branches almost equally participated in the open fresher's survey. The Electrical (EE) branch exhibited the utmost participation in the survey, just like their seniors, with about 15% of all the entries. Next, in order with 14.5%, Information Technology(IT) fellas filled out the survey forms. Civil Engg (CE) branch showed the least participation lagging, with only 10.7%.

Gender Ratio

Capture.PNG

So here we are effectively coping up with the cliché engineering colleges, maintaining a gender ratio of 2:9 which can be guessed by 81% male responses on the survey and just 19% females. The less percentage of female participation in engineering streams, though being given a 20% girls category reservation by AKTU colleges, is a bad news to the majority gender as well.

Where are they from?

As expected the origin section was flourished with the majority of people, 35.4% to be precise, coming from big towns but not metros.

The folks from small towns constituted around 28.7% and people from the village making up to 23.2% and metropolitan cities 12.7%.

COME FROM.PNG

Did they join any coaching academy for the exam preparations?

COACHING OR NOT.PNG

79.6% more than half joined coaching academies for exam whereas the remaining didn't.

Lakhs of investment and an underemployed nation! Whom wouldn't wish to be a coaching teacher?

Did they move to other cities for coaching?

54.9% i.e 220 out of 401 didn't move to another city for coaching whereas the remainings did move.

Way to go, Kota and South Delhi!

MOVE TO OTHER CITIES.PNG

How important was school education to them?

SCHOOL IMP.PNG

57.9% considered school as moderately important implicating a collective contribution from NCERT and competitive exam books.

19.2% remarked their schools as the only source of learning and the only companion in their progress of exam preparation.

Nice progress, education system!

Whereas 13.5% constituted people who never gave much importance to school and the rest of the people claimed themselves to be in a dummy school.

Fluency in English

english fluency.PNG

With the majority of down to earth people, half the students 49.6% rated their fluency skills as three.

23.2% people marked their English speaking skills as 4 and only 7% people that is 28 out of 401 have confidence in their skills to give it a five-star reading.

13.2% gave a two's to their skills and 7% (28/401) accepted that their English is poor.

How many Droppers??

78.8% (316 out of 401) folks took the long hard road and walked, dropping a year for preparation whereas the remaining 21.2% were total freshies in the college.

DROP OR NOT.PNG

Why Engineering over other fields?

why engg.PNG

There were 53.6% students assuring their interest in engineering whereas 15.5% marked a chance for better jobs in this software oriented country. 10% considered taking admission in engineering college as a backup plan.

More singers, stand up comedians, researchers to come. 13% opted for the choice- good at studies which meant taking engineering as an option.

The curious case of parents hoaxed by 10 CGPA indeed! Just 7.2% of all had no idea about other fields and the remaining in minority joined engineering institute due to social pressure.

Why IET ?

IET being the top AKTU college made sense for students selecting it as their next resort with about
60.6% reasoning with this.

The next 20.4% people fixated on IET as they did not make it to IITs and NITs and hereby taking admission in this state running government college. The least number of people opted for other options such as the branch of choice, proximity to home, research opportunities and academic structure.

why IET.PNG

Which other colleges were they considering?

OTHER CHOICES.PNG

With the needle of choice pointing towards IITs and NITs, 88.8% considered opting for the brand names. The remaining folks considered Foreign universities, central universities, private colleges and other state
colleges as well. The research interested students would consider IISER and IISC as their priority and it was a fair choice as well.

Most preferred branch?

BRANCH PREF.PNG

Computer Science Department (CSE+IT) being the topmost preferred branch of IET with about 52.1% (192 out 401) people considering this as their prior branch. Writing and executing codes, hun!

Next Electrical Engineering (EE) is preferred with 12.2% (49) people opting for it if given a chance.

15.2% preferred (ECE+EIE) and ONLY 17 preferred in ChE.

What do you they about the induction programme?

INDUCT REVIEWS.PNG

How would they like to spend their time here?

The majority of public of about 133 of all would love to involve themselves in extracurricular activities here in IET. After all, we have countless clubs here from coding to robotics to dramatics to western and Indian music to astronomy to literary and what not!

Next with 31.7% people focussing their whole attention on academics. Then coming up with the freelancers and interns which constituted about 14%.

Astonishingly, there were no reported cases of research enthusiasts. Whereas 14% would like to invest their time in sports and 27 out of 401 in startups.

Academic Importance according to the Freshers

ACAD IMP.PNG

Under the survey conducted over WHAT IS THE SOLE PURPOSE OF ACADEMICAL KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN COLLEGE? the results were as:

CAREER PLANNING(48.9%): It’s pretty much sure almost half students are taking academics into consideration for future plans viz jobs, placements and internships for which it’s a hard and fast rule to have a command over the stuff being taught.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE(38.2%): Surprisingly or unsurprisingly most of the other half category is into the edification of things chances are that they might be interested in the research work.

SGPA BALANCE(10.5%):This half of the students are quoted obviously, in fact, it constitutes almost the 100% the credibility of the survey but for the sake of reading other prior things as option people change their opinions and that has to be true because at the end marks also do matter.

PURSUING BACHELORS FOR THE FURTHERANCE OF AN UG DEGREE(2.4%):It’s the obvious category yes there are people who continue doing the studies or precisely the undergraduate course just to get a degree and B.Tech being a technical course offers more credibility in the near future disregarding a
person’s interest in it.

What is your opinion on college attendance?

COLLEGE ATTEND.PNG

This year 22.7% students of IET are the self-learner. They expect college attendance to be not given much importance and would prefer gathering more knowledge by selves than by academy.

After all "No one can do the learning for you".

Maximum people (41.4%) marked the college percentage above 50 but less than 75; consoling themselves for the 75% attendance rule.

28.4% supported the 75% rule whereas the remainings had no idea about the total percentage system.

It would be uneven for them. Probably good staff deserves better attendance. It was ironic to find that out of 120 students who claimed that attendance in classes should be above 75%, only 20 students were able to gain an excellent understanding in the classes. (Nerd Alert!)

Understanding Of Lectures

LECTURE UNDERS.PNG

Political Interests

Around 70 students are really interested in political affairs which is hard to believe because the only thing they know about politics is.. well...... pot
Half the freshmen are moderately influenced by politics which is good news considering they barely know how to balance a chequebook, how the hell can we expect them to administer the big leagues. The rest (around 140) who claim to hate politics to its core, might or might not have filled the survey under the influence of Donald Trump's tweets.

Religious beliefs

RELIGOUS BELIEFS.PNG

CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL

ALCOHOL CONSUMP.PNG

Out of the 401 responses, 90% of the students claim that they have never consumed alcohol so we put them in the green zone.
Whereas we always find frat kids to have high affluence to alcohol and consume them like hogs in heat,
surprisingly students in Iet are smart enough to NOT indicate that on the survey.
Although around 6% newbies have tried it only once *air quotes* so we've decided to believe them.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICT.PNG

The newbies-16.7% rated themselves at level 1 of addiction with either being non-addicted or at the verge of addiction

The old-schoolers-23.2% rated themselves at level 2 which successfully crossed the stage 1 to join the majority at level 3

The middlers- 35.9% came under the category of level 3 or the moderate level with 144 students with an exponential increase in the devoted hours

The pumpers- 15.5% rated themselves at level 4 with a requirement of a little push to reach the final stage

The extremists-8.7% rated themselves at level 5 with the maximum punctuality to the digital world

What are your plans after graduation?

FUTURE PLANS.PNG

This year people with clarity of vision have entered the gates of IET with just 15.5% in a dilemma that is without a purpose currently.

Most of the scholars (19.7%) made their mind for civil services examination right from their first year, whereas 23.2% aim to be working in a core job.

Students who opted for Civil Services, maximum were from CE Dept. Surprisingly, it was about 55% of the total strength of Civil Engg Branch.

The other 20.2% still have persistency left within them to build more steps that are the category opting out for higher studies after their bachelors.

There were 7.8% of CAT enthusiasts and the least percentage of the risk takers entrepreneurs, weaving ideas in college with about 19.7%.

This year again is no exception, the ratio gap between the two genders is too high and as is the scenario in most of the technical institutions the number of males in the college is about four times more than that of females. Well, even the prominent institutions have not found a way to eradicate such effects.

Students from moderate cities occupied a major portion of all to take admission in IET's, being a state level government college. People from small towns and villages together constituted an equal fraction as former. After all, great knowledge comes from humblest of origins.

With the increasing competition, students are turning towards coaching institutions for preparing for entrance exams. Although most of these people are following a trend which by far and wide has been well set up with an increase in the number of people craving the coveted seats at IITs and NITs. Every 3 out of 4 students took coaching classes for entrance exams preparation. Also, 45.4% (182) students went a step further by stepping out of their homes and moving to other cities for better preparations, facilities and reputable coaching institutions.

Most of the students considered IET because they couldn't make it toIITs and NITs and also because IET ranked top in all UPTU colleges. The brand names were the first priority of the folks here in IET and supposedly the priority of the majority fraction of India. The software-oriented country's job provisional system swayed the interests of the bulk to CSE branch as per the survey. The new minds still haven't explored their interests and let's hope we could eradicate the problems of the minority gender participation and vision clarity of the students of India promptly. Gratifying the fellow people who helped us in researching and extracting data and to all the members of the team who worked so hard in coining and assembling things. And a very special thanks to your juniors of the 1st year who took out their precious time in filling up the survey forms.
